What qualities make for a good therapy dog?
An effective therapy dog team pairs a calm, well-socialized dog with a proactive handler. Key traits include the dog's gentle, confident temperament—enjoying interaction with strangers—and high-level obedience to remain gentle under stress. The team is defined by trust, clear communication, and the dog's ability to remain focused while providing comfort. If you are not sure, sign up for a MEET & GREET with one of our instructors or CONTACT US to get more information.

What does a typical site visit consist of?
Site visits generally last for 45 minutes from start to finish, with some being a bit longer and some shorter. We try to always have at least 2 teams (team = owner & dog) per visit, with the exception of special events. Once all Doggie Disciple teams scheduled for the visit have arrived at the destination, we meet outside, near the entrance, for a quick moment of prayer before entering the facility together. It is important for us to enter as a group in order to promote a calm, organized experience for dog and resident alike.
Site visits are scheduled with the facility ahead of time so residents wanting to meet our dogs will usually be gathered in a common area waiting to greet us. This is where the fun starts! Teams visit with as many residents as they are able; most encounters lasting from 5 - 10 minutes. At the end of our visit, we do a quick group meetup near the entrance before departing.
I signed up for a site visit, but can no longer make it, what should I do?
If you have signed up for a visit and cannot make it, notify us on Team Reach as soon as possible. Our facilities really look forward to our visits and we want to make sure that we are reliable. dependable and have dog teams at the site when we are committed to be there.

Yes, we have a place for you if you love dogs but don't currently have your own.
Be sure to contact us about becoming a "dogless handler".
I only live in the area part time, can I still be a volunteer?
Yes, you can volunteer with Doggie Disciples even if you here in Florida on a part time basis. Please indicate that you are part-time when you fill out your membership application form.
How often can I go on site visits?
You can go on as many visits as you and your dog would like. Most of our volunteers make visits once a week, with some volunteers doing more and some less. We ask that you be able to commit to at least one visit each month.
Where is the biggest need for dog therapy in the Venice / Englewood area of FL?
By far the greatest need for therapy dog companionship is in senior care facilities, especially where residents are not allowed to bring their pets. Memory care facilities and nursing homes have an overwhelming need for human & dog interaction. Our dogs help us to connect with residents to share the love of Christ.
Will this be a positive activity for my dog?
This is an activity that your dog will come to look forward to with great anticipation especially if they enjoy meeting new people. We have found that once our dogs understand that putting on their service vest means that they get to go somewhere with you to get attention and pets...they cannot wait to get in the car!
I'm a little nervous to go on a site visit, how do I know that I will enjoy volunteering?
While therapy dog work is not for everybody, our teams find that after going on a few site visits they begin to establish relationships with the residents and see the impact that their volunteer work has on the individuals they connect with. The visits are deeply rewarding for everyone involved, (including your furry friend) which is what motivates our teams to continue making a difference in our community. Plus, it is really fun to make new friends and see our dogs enjoying so much attention and affection!
